About Savings Goal Calculator: Monthly Contribution & Target Planner
A savings goal calculator determines the exact periodic cash contributions required to reach a target milestone by a specific deadline.
It combines future value compounding on your existing starter savings with ordinary annuity monthly deposits.
How the calculation works
Net goal deficit
Target amount minus future value of current savings: Deficit = Target โ Current ร (1 + i)^n.
Required monthly savings
PMT = Deficit ร i / ((1 + i)^n โ 1), where i is monthly interest rate and n is total months.
How to use this calculator
- 1Enter your target savings milestone and existing savings balance.
- 2Specify the time horizon in years and expected annual return or interest rate.
- 3Review the required monthly contribution, total out-of-pocket deposits, and interest share.
Understanding the result
Starting earlier dramatically increases the proportion of your goal funded by compound interest rather than out-of-pocket wages.
Even modest increases in monthly savings shorten the timeframe required to reach major milestones.
Important limitations
- Results are projections, not guaranteed returns or financial advice.
- Rates, taxes, fees, timing, and product rules can materially change real outcomes.
- Assumes regular, uninterrupted monthly deposits and a constant annual interest yield.
