How the calculation works
Horizontal runs
Half-span = full span ÷ 2. Lower run = half-span × break proportion; upper run is the remaining half-span.
Vertical rises
Each rise equals its horizontal run × tan(the corresponding roof angle). Total roof height is lower rise + upper rise.
Rafter lengths
Each lower and upper rafter is the hypotenuse √(run² + rise²). Both sides are added for total sloped rafter length per truss.
Roofing area
Overhang-adjusted sloped length across both sides × building length including both end overhangs. Waste is applied after geometric area.
Truss quantity
Estimated trusses = ceil(building length ÷ truss spacing) + 1, using consistent units and a truss at each end.

What angle should a gambrel roof be?
There is no universal pair. The 60° lower and 30° upper defaults create a recognizable planning shape, but appearance, clearance, loads, materials, and engineered details can require different geometry.
