Roof footprint is the horizontal plan projection; roof surface area follows the slope and is larger when the roof is pitched. For a simple roof with uniform pitch, a pitch multiplier converts horizontal area to sloped area. Complex intersections, curves, unequal slopes, and dormers need a measured roof plan or professional takeoff.

Measure the horizontal roof footprint

Measure building length and width at the roof plan, including the horizontal projection of eave and gable overhangs where relevant. For a simple rectangle, footprint area = plan length × plan width. Do not measure a sloping rafter as the plan width. Divide L-shaped plans into non-overlapping rectangles, calculate each footprint, and add them.

If an illustrative 10% purchasing allowance is appropriate for the chosen product and layout, order-area planning becomes about 1,550 ft². Waste is not part of geometric roof area, so show it separately.

Gable and simple hip roofs

For a symmetrical gable roof with one pitch, multiplying the complete horizontal footprint works because both roof planes are represented in the projection. The same principle can work for a simple hip roof when all planes share one pitch and fully cover the footprint. Hip cuts, ridge caps, starter courses, valleys, flashing, and product packaging still affect material quantities. Mixed pitches or additions should be calculated plane by plane.

Waste and material planning

Waste depends on roof shape, valleys, hips, penetrations, product dimensions, fastening pattern, bundle coverage, and installer method. A simple rectangle may need less cutting than a complex roof with the same area. Confirm whether manufacturer coverage is net installed coverage and whether ridge, hip, underlayment, flashing, and fasteners are measured separately.
