Asphalt planning moves through four steps: area, compacted thickness, volume, and mass. The arithmetic is straightforward, but density, compaction, lift design, subgrade, and plant ordering requirements are project-specific.

Area and compacted depth

For a rectangular driveway, area = length × width. Divide irregular paving into measured shapes and avoid overlap. Convert the specified compacted thickness to the same base unit before multiplying. A common error is entering millimetres as metres: 50 mm is 0.05 m, not 50 m.

Volume and tonnage formulas

Volume = area × compacted thickness Mass = volume × compacted density Metric tonnes = kilograms ÷ 1,000 For imperial measurements, calculate cubic feet, convert as needed, and use a compatible density unit. Density must describe the relevant compacted mix and conditions; aggregate type, binder, temperature, and achieved compaction all affect it.

Worked driveway example

A 20 m × 4 m driveway has 80 m² of area. At 50 mm compacted thickness, volume is 80 × 0.05 = 4.0 m³. Using an illustrative project assumption of 2,350 kg/m³ gives 9,400 kg, or 9.4 metric tonnes before allowance. If a chosen 5% planning allowance is justified, the order estimate is 9.87 tonnes. The density and allowance are examples, not universal values.

Waste, compaction, and delivery planning

Do not casually add a “compaction factor” when the density and depth already refer to compacted material; that can double-count. Allowance may cover small placement losses, geometry, minimum plant quantities, or uncertainty, but should be documented. Contractors may plan several lifts, joints, tack coat, transport, paving sequence, truck payload, and temperature windows separately.
